Art Docents - Meet the Masters & Clay

Art Docent Program

The Art Docent Program is a year-round program that offers students exposure to fine arts and opportunities to experiment with a variety of art media. The program consists of two main parts – “Meet the Masters” and “Clay Projects.” 


Funded by the Tassajara Hills PTA, the Art Docent Program is run by parent volunteers with support of the school staff. Each classroom has one or more “Art Docents” who receive training and then organize and teach the art projects. A background in art is not necessary! 


Meet the Masters 

Meet the Masters is a highly regarded age-appropriate art program in which students are introduced to FOUR famous artists over the course of the school year. At class-level assemblies, students learn about the artist, and then each student completes a “directed-draw” art project in class (led by the classroom’s Meet the Masters Art Docent).


Clay Projects

Clay projects are hand-made clay art pieces created by the students, then glazed and fired in our own kiln. At least ONE clay project is completed per year per classroom, but typically the number of projects are as follows:

  • Kindergarten and 1st Graders: 3 clay projects 
  • 2nd and 3rd Graders: 2 clay projects
  • 4th and 5th Graders: 1 clay project 

Clay Art Docents may work with the teachers to determine the type of pieces to create.

Breakfast Book Club

Breakfast Book Club takes place from January through April and usually meets the first Wednesday of each month before school. Students read assigned books (a different one for each grade), and volunteer parents facilitate small group book discussions. Participating students also enjoy a quick breakfast before breaking up into their small groups. The program is open to students in 2nd through 5th grade at THE.

Copy Center

Volunteers complete copy jobs needed for the teachers according to the job order form teachers fill out.  Volunteer hours are to be determined and you can sign up as often as once a week or every other week.  It usually takes 45 minutes to complete the jobs for one day. Diversity & Lang. Liaisons

The Diversity and Language Liaisons Chair assists in promoting diversity education and tolerance, as well as encouraging diverse parent involvement to represent all student populations, at Tassajara Hills. Responsibilities also include attending a monthly meeting held by the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs Inclusion and Diversity Committee, and providing regular reports to the Tassajara Hills PTA. If you have any questions, please contact Diversity and Language Liaisons Co-Chairs Lilia Bulgucheva or Shakeela Hurt.

Fall Carnival

The Fall Carnival is the PTA's primary fundraising event and will take place on Saturday, October 20, 2018. The Carnival Chairs organize and lead a team of volunteers to plan and operate the Fall Carnival. The Chairs are responsible for communication with Mrs. Dodson, the PTA Executive Board, Tassajara Teachers and Staff, Room Parents, and the parent community.  The Carnival sub-committees generally include:

  • Games - organizes the games, helps set up and take down the games, and communicates with the volunteer coordinator how many needed to staff each game
  • Field Events - organizes the field events, helps set up and take down the field events, and communicates with the volunteer coordinator how many needed to staff each activity
  • Prize Booth - collects and sorts the prizes for the prize booth
  • Food - collects donations from families/companies for food/concessions (i.e., popcorn, snow cones, etc)
  • Volunteer Coordinator - helps to recruit and organize volunteers for set-up and the day of carnival
  • Treat Walk - organizes and operates a "cake walk" on the day of Carnival and packages donated treats, like cookies, cake pops, and cupcakes, for the winners
  • Witch Hat Contest - organizes and promotes a witch hat decorating contest. The witch hats are auctioned off at Carnival.
  • Dessert Auction - organizes a silent auction of cakes and desserts that have been donated by parents and teachers.
  • Tickets - receives ticket pre-orders and fills them. This person also ensures that the tickets are given to the correct teacher for distribution to the children.
  • Raffle Contest - organizes and operates the Carnival raffle, including ordering tickets and gathering donations for prizes
  • Public Relations & Communications - prepares flyers and posters to communicate carnival-related events to the school population
  • Entertainment - organizes activities, such as dance troupes, music, or DJ, to entertain families at Carnival 
  • Arts & Crafts - organizes arts and craft activities at Carnival
  • Sponsorship - reaches out to local businesses interested in sponsoring a booth at Carnival

Family Fun Events

The PTA will be hosting a Family Fun Event on Thursday, September 13, 2018.  This year's event will be a Family Movie Night. Members of the Movie Night committee plan the movie, arrange for the projector and concessions, create and distribute the movie flyer, and keep track of the RSVPs.  Past family fun events include a Sock Hop and Bingo Night.  This is an opportunity to welcome all Tassajara Hills families back to school and provide an opportunity to get together, see friends, and have fun!  Stay tuned for more information.

Health & Wellness

The Health & Wellness Committee Chair meets with the district-level Health & Wellness committee to share ideas about promoting healthy habits at school. Areas of focus include nutrition education/healthy school lunches, physical education and activity, obesity awareness, school gardens, healthy school celebrations, and healthy fundraising.  Any questions? The Hospitality Chair plans and hosts special events for the PTA and school families such as morning coffees.  Our first event will be the First Days of School Coffee on Monday, August 13 from 8:20am - 9:20am and Tuesday, August 14 from 8:10am - 9:10am.  Want to get involved? Junior Achievement

Junior Achievement is a program designed to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy by becoming financially literate, workforce ready, and armed with an entrepreneurial mindset.  JA has grade-specific lesson plans that are interactive and utilize a blended-learning approach that enables students to apply their learnings to life inside and outside of school.  All Junior Achievement programs focus on three important factors for 21st century success: financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship.  


To learn more, please visit the Junior Achievement Nor Cal website for an overview of the programs by grade level.  Would you like to be the Junior Achievement volunteer for your child's class?  Volunteers are provided with all lesson materials and coordinate with the teacher to schedule and teach 5 30-minute sessions to their classes in the Spring.  are provided, and it would be a great opportunity to work closely with the students Volunteers receive teaching material from the coordinator. The Legislation Chair advocates for issues that affect students and teachers at the District, State, and National levels.  The San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs Legislative Advocacy Committee receives, analyzes, and disseminates information from our federal and state legislature, and advises the Legislation Chairs from each school on PTA positions taken at monthly meetings.  The Legislative Chair then communicates the latest developments on those issues to the Parent and Teachers at Tassajara Hills.

Lost and Found

Volunteers organize items that have been left behind at school and collected in the lost & found bins in the MPR. They fold the items and put them on display for pick up days and arrange for the donation of items not claimed. Want to help? Please contact Shakeela Hurt.

Multi-Cultural Night

Multi-Cultural Night is a wonderful, free family fun event where families can visit booths representing various countries, sample foods from all over the world, and enjoy a variety of cultural performances by our students and the community.  Tassajara Hills' 4th Annual Multi-Cultural Night will take place on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Would you like to help plan and organize this event?  Or would you like to represent a country by hosting a booth?  Contact Multi-Cultural Night Chair Shakeela Hurt.

Parent & Community Concerns

The goal of the PTA Parent & Community Concerns (PCC) Chair is to offer parent education events and information throughout the school year to help you navigate the road ahead. Some events are offered at individual school sites while others are open to parents from the entire school district.  Be sure to check your school newsletter, school website and the SRVCPTA newsletter for information on upcoming events. For more information, please see the SRV Council of PTAs Parent & Community Concerns page.

Red Ribbon Week

Volunteers in this area help with planning events and activities for the school during Red Ribbon Week (usually in late October) to increase students' awareness of the importance of making healthy choices and the dangers of drug and alcohol use.  If you are interested in helping with Red Ribbon Week, please contact Eugenia Chern.

Reflections is a nation-wide arts appreciation and recognition program for students sponsored by National PTA.  The theme for the 2018-2019 school year is "Heroes Around Me."  It takes place in the Fall, with the submission deadline usually set for November. Students may submit their original creations in the following categories:

•    Dance Choreography
•    Film Production
•    Visual Arts
•    Photography
•    Literature

•    Music Composition

Room Parents

Room Parents work with the teacher and parents to arrange class parties, collect donations, field trips, schedule volunteer times, and assist with other classroom projects as needed. They also help coordinate events for Staff Appreciation Week in May. For more detailed information, please contact Room Parent Coordinator Sara Gregory.


This committee assists the school SITE council in meeting the safety needs of our students. Activities include maintaining emergency bags in each classroom, providing window shades in case of emergency, and parking lot safety.  Contact Safety Chair Kim McKnight for further information.

Science Night

Science Night is an annual PTA event in which we contract a local science museum to come to our school and bring the science to us!


Last year, the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose hosted the event.  The theme was "Amusement Park Science" in which we explored the science involved in popular amusement park attractions. Children and parents together explored gravity as they created miniature roller coasters, experienced the power of springs as they made their own pinball machines, and tested their strength while learning about air and water power.


Science Night is scheduled for Thursday, February 21, 2019.  Typically, the event takes place in two separate sessions:

  • 5:30-6:45pm for grades K-2

  • 6:45-8:00pm for grades 3-5​​

Sister School

The Sister School program provides support to our partner school in a disadvantaged area of Contra Costa County through donation drives and arranges delivery of items to the school. Currently, our Sister School is Grant Elementary in Richmond, CA.  Typically, we hold two or three drives per school year, for items such as coats, toiletries, Halloween costumes, and school supplies.  Any questions?  Please contact Nicole Bruebaker.

Soul Shoppe

Soul Shoppe is our PTA sponsored program focused on building character and creating safe schools. Last Spring, Tassajara Hills students learned about the "clean up" apology.  As part of Soul Shoppe, we also have the Peacemaker Program, a Student Leadership program that trains a team of select 3rd, 4th and 5th grade Peacemakers to solve problems and provide allyship and communication support on the playground and in the classroom.

Special Needs

The goal of the PTA Special Needs Committee is to: (1) provide information and support to parents and staff so they can help children with special needs succeed; and (2) help ALL children and adults understand and appreciate challenges faced by children with special needs. The Special Needs Chair attends monthly meetings regarding current programming for Special Needs in our district and promotes them within the school, and also organizes Ability Awareness Week, which is scheduled for the week of September 19, 2018.

SRV Run for Education

The Run for Education (formerly “Primo’s Run”) has been a tradition in the San Ramon Valley for 35 years. Our 10k, 5k Timed, 5k Fun Run Walk, Mini Run, and this year's Friendship Run, are the primary fund-raising activities for the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes education in our community in partnership with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. Together with our 35 affiliates, we annually raise millions of dollars to support our underfunded schools.  This year's run will take place on Sunday, October 14, 2018.

Staff Relations Committee

“Science – Technology – Engineering – Math”


STEM Club is a club started by a group of parents interested in promoting STEM education as an extracurricular activity for our students at Tassajara Hills Elementary. In the past, students have dissected owl pellets, built motorized jitterbugs, made fruit batteries, solved engineering challenges such as egg drop and tallest marshmallow/toothpick structures.  Each class is led by a volunteer parent “teacher” and facilitated by additional parent volunteers to assist students with projects.

Stride for Pride

Looking for a fun way to volunteer but can't commit to every week? Or maybe you can commit and are looking for something new? Stride for pride is our school's running program. The kids run laps and get tokens for meeting their goals. It takes place before school from 8:05am - 8:20am before school and during lunch recess - days vary depending on parent volunteer availability.  Parent volunteers are needed to help monitor and record the number of laps the kids complete (as well as cheer them on!) Please contact Stride for Pride Chair Jane Cho if you are interested in volunteering or have any further questions.

Vision & Hearing Screening

Volunteers on this committee assist the nurse to organize and schedule the vision and hearing screenings at THE in Fall 2018.  Interested in helping?  Please contact Eugenia Chern.


Help capture memories for our children by volunteering for Yearbook!  The Yearbook committee assists with taking photos of school events, and designing pages for the yearbook. We are in need of parent volunteers for class pages, as well as a Yearbook Co-Chair.  If interested, please contact Linda Niazi
